Many factors are considered when deciding upon a Big and Little match. Each volunteer is encouraged to share concerns and personal preferences with the caseworker. Thought is given to:
(1) The Big’s life experiences and personal goals and skills.
(2) A realistic evaluation of the Big’s schedule and availability to commit consistent time to a Little.
(3) The age range and family situation of a Little with whom the volunteer would be most suited.
(4) Personality characteristics, social skills and needs of a Little.
(5) Hobbies and interests that may be shared or developed.
The caseworker is best equipped to make a successful match when that person is well acquainted with both the unmatched Little and the Volunteer.
When the volunteer, caseworker and parent have made a decision, the caseworker arranges a convenient time to join the Big at the Little's home in order to officially match the volunteer to the child. This match meeting will help establish the guidelines and develop the goals they hope to achieve. After the initial introduction, during which mutual information is shared, the pair is encouraged to go on an outing or to make arrangements for an outing in the near future. MATCH SUPPORT
A caseworker is assigned to offer support to a Big throughout their involvement with the agency. The caseworker maintains regular contact with each Big and Little match. Progress review meetings are arranged periodically throughout a match to discuss experiences and ideas for change and further growth in the relationship. Upon completing the Match Commitment, options for involvement are discussed with the Big, the Little and the parent/guardian. Several options are available.
Caseworkers are readily accessible and Bigs, Parents/Guardians, are encouraged to call often, especially when they feel the need to talk about a problem or concern they have regarding their commitment. In order to better assist all involved, it is helpful for the caseworker to be informed of events and changes occurring in the Big's life as well as in the Little's family.
